Still had a sticky moment yesterday when I went to fire up the Touring. Yep you've guest it a familiar 'click'. To cut a long story short turned out the be the live feed to the starter motor, battery end. A proper clean up with some emery paper sorted the problem. I also replaced that small mucky in line filter for one twice the size. So far so good. The 2000 seems happier and a bit more lively too!

Reading Pauls comments about fuses, I would like to add the following bit of useless info for the anoracks!

The fuses that are used in our cars have 2 basic types of construction.
The most common ones use a type of alumimimum as the fuse. These are the ones that react against the copper lugs in the fuse holder and cause all manners of problems.
The fuse you want to use is the type made with copper. These last for ages and very rarely corrode but are quite hard to find at motorfactors etc.

Also, if you have been out driving your car and wash it before putting it away, drive the car around the block using the brakes to dry out the discs and pads, as the pads absorb moisture, rust up against the disc and also over an extended period, tend to make the caliper pistons stick due to moisture being in the immediate area.

I've been bombing about in my 2000 touring over the last few months (determined to use the car more this year) Ever since the engine transplant last year the starter motor has been playing up. Graunges intermitantly. Its finally died. Frustratingly I had the starter reconditioned. So off it comes tomorrow and back to the workshop it goes. I will check its not a loose wire before it comes off though to save any ranting embarrassment.
Thats the second time in 15 years its left me stranded although I managed to bump start it and get it back home. Not bad I really. The first was a top hose, it decided to split in the middle of the night in central London. AA'd back home to Suffolk. I can't really complain and most minor faults can be addressed at the road side with some basic tools. All electrical faults are usually those crapy fuses that need removing and all terminals cleaning every couple of months.
Coincidently its those damn fuses that the 02 shares with our 79 Alfasud which were at fault today causing alternator to stop charging the battery. We got home OK but then the Sud wouldn't re start until we used jump leads. Flat battery. That still didn't dampen a wonderful day at the AUTO ITALIA CONCOURS Stanford Hall.
