The proper way to adjust your rear brakes is to release the handbrake cable adjusting nuts, then carry out the adjustments on the backplate. Once that is done, you can then balance up the handbrake and it needs to go up no more than around 6 to 8 clicks before it is on fully.
By the way, any lubricant/grease inside a brake drum assembly will attrach brake dust and this can cause sticking. It is better to keep everything dry and clean when reassembling brake levers and attachments.
If you feel inclined to use grease, you can put a very small amount of copper grease on the shoe where it touches the locating bracket at the bottom and also where it touches the piston.
Cheers,
John.

Kev,
I suspect you may have a siezed piston, I would replace the whole unit rather then try and repair.  I had a similar problem on my 02tii before I converted to discs.
While you have the drums off use some anti sieze grease like copper ease on all the small moving parts.

Subject: [bmw02] Binding rear brakes

Noticed my OSR brake is binding. I can slacken off the backplate 17mm nut adjusters, (no, they're not siezed!) but the brakes still bind even if I don't use the handbrake. Guess I'll have to have a play & remove the drums to see if the shoes or wheel cylinders are sticking. There's always something to do.......................
