Hey Guys,
This issue about the diff cover has gone mental with 29 emails about it in my inbox today. I need one for my race car cause the diff really gets quite hot when I have been doing a rally or a race. The main fact is that it can carry more oil and cool it in one hit.
The E21 diff cover as standard has only one mounting lug on it as opposed to the 02's two. The only thing that can get in the way of the cover's fins is the exhaust pipe (if it's larger than stock) if it follows the original exhaust pipe path.
With casting alli, there are gravity feed and pressure cast types which all cost different amounts. If the casting is poor, they can be prone to leaking oil out so it's critical to make sure that the casting is done to a high standard and in a grade of alli that is suitable for the job required as it has to carry all the twisting torque from the drive train. Some replicas can be better than the original, but I have seen some shockers that are twisted with holes 1mm in dia.inside the housings.
Whoever forks out with the money first, keeps the original cover and the cost is then split amongst the other buyers. Or alternatively, one person buys, arranges and finances the castings and sells on to the others at cost price.
On the subject of 'should I have one' is that not everybody wants one and it would still be exculsive if that's what you want. I need one to keep my diff cool, not looks.
By the way, the only E30 diff that will fit an 02 is the narrow type, but it's only the internals that can be fitted to the E21 or 02 diff housing. It's a lot of work to fit the complete diff unit as you have to get the E30 diff carrier and cut and weld it to suit the 02 or E21 back beam. I am doing this on my E21 race car as it's running a 250hp engine.
Cheers,
John Hudson.
