Just completed my first job on my 02
I removed the door panels, took out the lock cylinders and got keys made for them. worked fine, downsides: now I have three keys (ignition and two different door locks!) Also, dont know what is causing it but the when the window is rolled up or down there is a point in the cycle where it bumps against the door panel. Must open it up again to have a look.

My question: I thought at first that the lock plungers could be pressed while the door was open which would lock the door when shut. After looking at the lock mechanism I am not so sure. It seemed that the plunger could only be pushed down when the door was closed. Can someone tell me how is should work?

Cheers

Hi Ed

The doors can only be locked by pushing the button from the inside, or using the key from the outside. Either way the door has to be shut (my friend Lee drives me nuts always pushing the button down when the doors open - and then slamming it! Grrrrr!). Its not obvious though, when you consider nearly every other car in the world works differently to this (at least all the ones I've ever owned).

Mind you, it does mean its almost impossible to lock yourself out of an 02, unless of course you drop your keys in the boot and then shut it without noticing. That can be an expensive slip up.

I'd love a BMW badge for my boot   - some drunken teenagers at a local party prised mine off on Saturday night and it must be a trophy on a wall/belt somewhere in Brighton....

If anyone has one, please can they bring it to Gaydon?

Thanks

Hi Ed,
That's correct about the door being closed before you can push the button down (esp the driver's door).  It's done that way to stop people locking the car up with the key in the ign etc.
Cheers,
John
